MEAT PROCESSING CAPACITY GRANT, NOW LIVE! As mentioned in our weekly legislative updates, $5 million in Coronavirus Relief Funds were directed to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture to provide grants to small meat processors. The South Dakota Department of Agriculture is now seeking applicants who plan to increase their processing capacity to meet the demand brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will reimburse processors a portion of expenses dependent on the total amount of eligible applications received and approved. Eligibility: Grants are available to meat processors located in South Dakota with less than 60 employees meeting one of the following criteria: - State inspected "equal to" slaughter and/or processing plants; - Licensed custom-exempt slaughter plants, or - Very small federally inspected plants The applicant understands that reimbursement amounts are based on the applicant's applicable and reasonable project cost(s). Processor-eligible expenses must immediately impact the State's capacity to process or store South Dakota raised protein, including beef, pork, poultry, lamb, and bison. Applications are due May 1 and should include List of equipment planned to be purchased with an estimated cost. Equipment costs could include: - Coolers and Freezers - Portion cutters - Processing equipment (smoking units, sausage stuffer, etc.) - Equipment or facilities to hold livestock (fences, gates, chutes, etc.) - Contractor costs (plumbing, draining, venting, electrical work) Description of upgrade(s) Description of how this will improve the efficiency of processing activities and/or increase volume Awards will be announced on May 25, 2021.
