For more than 30 years the South Dakota Retailers Association has awarded scholarships to South Dakota students pursuing an education in retail, trades, or hospitality. The Retailers Association is continuing that tradition in 2026. The application period for the 2026 scholarship cycle is now open. Nathan Sanderson, South Dakota Retailers Association Executive Director, says the Association is looking for students who are gunning for business ownership or management in South Dakota. “We know our communities are stronger when they have healthy businesses,” said Sanderson. “Our goal is to help build strong business minds that help build strong business communities.” Throughout the history of the program, the Retailers Association has awarded more than $270,000 to 285 students. Last year, the Retailers awarded $16,500 among five students. “We continue to see an increasing impressive applicant pool,” said Chris Verhoek, Association Board Scholarship Chair and owner of Country Corner in Estelline. “There’s a lot of young talent in South Dakota and that certainly points to a positive future for the industry.” Scholarships start at $2,000 and support individuals studying for careers in retail, hospitality, business, or trades.
